Jagan sent to 14-day judicial custody

The YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, arrested in a disproportionate assets case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was sent to jail on Monday after being remanded to a 14-day judicial custody by a CBI court. The court rejected his anticipatory bail plea.

Judge A Pullaiah also dismissed the CBI's application seeking custody of Jagan for further interrogation. He was remanded to judicial custody till 11 June.

Reddy's family, who sat on a dharna protesting his arrest, alleged vendetta by the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, a charge the strongly refuted by the Congress. Reddy is the fifth person to be arrested in the case.

His party called a day-long strike on Monday to protest his arrest. It evoked a mixed response in the state, where a bus driver died in stone pelting. The bandh was by and large peaceful, the police said, adding that the state and Central government offices, banks and business establishments functioned normally.

The politics in Andhra Pradesh has hotted up after Reddy's arrest. In the wake of his arrest, the YSR Congress decided to field Y S Vijaya, the widow of the former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, as the main campaigner in the crucial 12 June bye-elections of 17 assembly constituencies and a Lok Sabha seat in the state.
