The case related to the murder of journalist Jyotirmoy (J) Dey will be given priority after underworld don Chhota Rajan is brought to the city and may be re-investigated if the court orders for it, Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed said on Thursday.
“Dey’s murder case is on trial before the court. The police cannot reopen it independently. If the court orders re-investigation, the Mumbai Police are duty bound to do so,” he said.
Dey, a journalist with a local tabloid, was shot dead by motorcycle-borne sharpshooters on June 11, 2011. He had done many reports on underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Rajan.
Javed was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function where he launched an app for the safety of women journalists.
Meanwhile, a team of Special Task Force (STF) of UP police is likely to visit Mumbai after Diwali to further probe on the leads provided by three persons, alleged to be linked with a member of Chhota Rajan gang, a senior officer said.
“An STF team is likely to visit Mumbai after Diwali,” said IG STF Sujit Pandey, adding that the arrested members have revealed some vital information. On being asked about Chhota Rajan gang’s connection with UP, he said its several members had been arrested in 1990s.“All the members are listed and we keep on monitoring their activities,” he said.
