It’s official: Modi aide Amit Shah crowned BJP president

PM Narendra Modi’s close aide Amit Shah on Wednesday was anointed as BJP president on Wednesday. Shah, 49, becomes the youngest-ever member to lead the party. His name was announced by outgoing BJP president Rajnath Singh at the party headquarters at 11, Ashok Road. Shah has been rewarded for delivering 71 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in politically significant Uttar Pradesh.

In a packed press conference accompanied by Modi, party veteran LK Advani and finance minister Arun Jaitley, outgoing party chief said, ‘Shah deserves to become the party president due his outstanding management skills.’ Announcing the change of guard, Rajnath Singh said, ‘We are confident that the party will grow under the guidance of Shah.’

Congratulating Shah, the PM expressed confidence that the party will become stronger under his leadership. ‘Amit bhai started his journey as an ordinary karyakarta and has repeatedly proven himself through tireless hard work and determination,’ Modi said in a statement issued by the PMO. ‘With the blessings of party elders and selfless efforts of karyakartas, BJP’s mission of creating a strong and developed India continues,’ PM’s statement said. Many party leaders feel that despite Shah’s controversial past, which will continue to haunt him, his extraordinary quality of tapping the ‘political weak nerve’ will help him stay a prominent leader of the party.
