‘It’s a task to please Aditya Chopra’

Actor Ranveer Singh, who got his break in the Bollywood from Aditya Chopra, says the shy producer has never praised his work and rather scolded him.

Ranveer made his acting debut with YRF’s Band Baaja Baaraat followed by Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, and now he will be seen in Gunday, another film from the same production house.

‘I feel lucky and fortunate to be working for Aditya. He is a great guy. But he has never said good things to me. He just scolds me. He just says good job and not more than that,’ Ranveer said in an interview here.

Gunday is set in Kolkata of the 70’s and it deals with two friends Bikram and Bala as they go from being small-time coal thieves to the black-marketing mafia. Ranveer’s character, Bikram, is slightly held-back, like an angry young man.

‘I don’t know if my character is similar or inspired by anyone. Somebody who works closely with YRF said to me that he gets a vibe of young Amitabh Bachchan by looking at me in Gunday. It is a huge compliment,’ he said.

‘Mr Bachchan is more than the reason for me to become an actor. I wanted to become actor because I used to watch Hindi films and was inspired by him. The cast and crew of the film were all youngsters so the atmosphere was energetic,’ he added.

Produced by Chopra, it also stars Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra and is slated to release on 14 February.

Ranveer also recalled that Bachchan had once sent him a hand-written note praising his work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela. ‘He is an icon of the country. For him to write beautiful things about my work and send bouquet of flowers was extraordinary. My mom felt proud while presenting this note to me and I got emotional,’ Ranveer said. He is also excited about sharing the screen-space with another veteran whom he admires- Govinda- in upcoming film Kill Dil. ‘I have a special bond with him.

He treats me like his son. I am huge fan of his. I love the way he dances, I used to copy him when I was in school. May be his contemporaries are still ruling the roost, but the fact is nobody ever had a talent like him,’ Ranveer said. ‘Comedy is the hardest thing to do, he was the only one having a flair for it. I don’t think any mainstream actor does effortless comedy like him. I challenge anybody of not getting engage while watching a Govinda film. I have cried every time whenever I saw him crying on screen,’ he said
