ITDC’s award-winning honcho Panwar plans huge expansion

ITDC vice chairman & managing director Dr Lalit Kumar Panwar was elated after receiving two prestigious National Awards by the Ministry of Tourism for the exemplary contribution of the Corporation towards the promotion and development of India’s tourism industry over the last one year. The two awards won are the 'Best Hotel Based Meeting Venue' awarded to The Ashok, New Delhi, ITDC’s flagship hotel and Sireesh Saxena, corporate executive chef, ITDC having served the hospitality sector for more than 37 years was awarded in the category – 'Best Chef' of the National Tourism Awards 2011-12.

Dr Panwar told reporters at a press conference held on Tuesday in the capital city that ITDC will be entering into five new domains as a part of their major expansion plans.

'We already have a made our presence felt in five seaports where we have established duty free shops, event management is also being heavily focussed on, Hunar se Rojgar will get special attention, revamping our sound and light shows at various monuments all over India to boost tourism and lastly the most important one, is setting up ITDC University of Tourism' he said.

Talking about the urgent need to set up a reliable and experienced institutions which is able to give job-ready graduates, Dr Panwar said 'The hospitality industry in India faces a shortage of about 100,000 people every year, and ITDC university will be able to bridge this gap by not only giving job-ready employees, but they would come with an experience shared by educationists who have 47 years of on-the-job expertise.'

The company expects to report a profit of Rs 30 crore this fiscal and is targeting a profit of Rs 50 crore next year, said Dr Panwar, vice chairman and managing director, ITDC.

‘We have cut down our costs, motivated our employees, and done some aggressive marketing to publicise our properties. We have also invested around Rs 70 crore in upgrading our existing properties including The Ashok, Samrat hotel and Janpath hotel in Delhi. It has led to our guests coming back to us,’ Panwar added.
