Israeli Embassy blast suspect stayed at Paharganj

Five months after the attack on Israeli embassy vehicle in Delhi, the name of the hotel, where the perpetrator of the incident Houshang Afshar Irani had stayed, has come to light. ‘In India he was found staying in Hotel High 5 Land in room number 305,’ a letter written by the public prosecutor, requesting for extension for period of investigation for further 90 days, states.

Afshar, who is alleged to be the one who made the explosives and who also attacked was found to be staying at this hotel in Karol Bagh in Delhi.

Afshar visited India on 25 April 2011 and left on 6 May 2011. This year, he again came to India on 29 January and left for Malaysia in the evening of 13 February (the day of the incident).

Similar attempt of attacking Israeli vehicle in Georgia happened on the same day. This attempt was foiled by the law enforcing agencies. On 14 February, two persons of Iranian origin were apprehended in Thailand when they were trying to cause explosion. Another person was apprehended in Malaysia, who was found to have applied for Indian VISA from Indian Embassy in Iran.

He has mentioned his contact number on the VISA form. Later, he was found contacting an Indian number, that belonged to Afshar.

After this, the CFSL team reached the Hotel High 5 Land. The CCTV footage that was recovered by the team, showed Afshar’s movements and one motorcycle was also seized, that was used for the attack.

On 11 April, the report of an expert was submitted by the Delhi Police. In the report, it came to the knowledge that the bombing that took place barely 500 metres away from the high-security residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and left the Israeli diplomat Tal Yeshua injured was caused by TNT. It is the highly explosive substance that was used in the improvised explosive device.

During the inspection in Hotel High 5 Land by the CFSL team, it was revealed that the material used for preparing the stick explosive device was recovered from the ceiling of the room. CFSL has confirmed the similarity between the articles seized from the site of explosion and the hotel.

Also, a few broken magnetic pieces were recovered from the room of the hotel, that confirmed that the magnetic strip was used to stick the magnetic bomb on the vehicle. Similar articles were recovered from the crime spot on 13 February. The Scooty used by Afshar to do the recee of the area was seized from the residence of Kazmi, who was arrested on 6 March, for allegedly being a part of larger conspiracy in the bombing incident.

In the name of evidence against Kazmi, Delhi Police only have the call details, the CCTV footage, and the evidences collected from the hotel. To gather more evidences, Delhi Police has approached a local court for issuance of Letters Rogatory to five nations, namely Georgia, Thailand, Malaysia, Iran and Israel.
