IPL money binds Sreesanth’s band of Blackberry girls

Tainted cricketer S Sreesanth's interrogation has led Delhi police to another mobile phone which he had gifted to a female friend from the money he earned from spot fixing in this season's Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, said a police official on Friday.

A Blackberry Bold mobile phone worth Rs. 9,000 was recovered Friday from the woman's house in Jaipur, police said.  Sreesanth came in contact with the woman this year after he was selected to play for IPL team Rajasthan Royals for this season. 'This female friend is the second girl to whom Sreesanth gifted a mobile phone from the money he earned from  spot fixing,' said the official.

Before the recovery of the Blackberry Bold mobile phone, Delhi police had recovered a Blackberry Z10 mobile phone priced at Rs 40,000 from his girlfriend's house in Jaipur Monday evening.

The cricketer also went on a shopping spree with the money he earned from spot fixing, buying apparel worth Rs.1.95 lakh for himself. He wanted to quickly dispose of the cash which he got after fixing, said the official.

Meanwhile, a plea for a separate cell in Tihar jail on the grounds of being ‘well educated’ and belonging to a ‘respected family’ was rejected by a Delhi court which on Friday dismissed the petition of former Ranji cricketer Manish Guddewar arrested in IPL spot fixing scandal.

The court rejected the plea of Guddewar, a former Ranji player of Vidarbha, saying lots of educated people are lodged in Tihar jail and the prison manual does not discriminate between undertrial prisoners.

Guddewar and four others arrested accused were on Friday sent to judicial custody till 4 June by the court.

In another development, the Delhi police was on Friday pulled up for ‘misleading’ and ‘hiding information’ from a court here in the IPL spot-fixing scandal case.

The court said the police are trying to mislead it and is seeking extension of police custody of two of the five accused without giving any reasonable grounds.
