IPL is here to stay

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the remaining four matches of ongoing Indian Premier League, which has been marred by the controversies relating to spot fixing allegations.

The court, however, asked Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to restore the glory of the gentleman’s game. The court said that the game of cricket is played in many countries for the last 125 years and so the BCCI must take action to maintain the glory of the game.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), a bench of Justices B S Chauhan and Dipak Misra said, ‘Let the gentleman’s game remain a gentleman’s game and not be tainted by irregularities and scams.’

The court also pulled up BCCI for its lackadaisical approach in dealing with such issues and asked it to take immediate steps.

The PIL had sought stay on the remaining matches of IPL in the wake of arrest of players and bookies as well as constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged irregularities in IPL. So far, 19 persons, including IPL franchise Rajasthan Royal’s three cricketers S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan, have been arrested from various cities for their alleged role in spot fixing.

BCCI counsel admitted in court that there have been irregularities and the cricketing body has set up a one-member committee and is taking other steps to prevent such incidents in future. The court directed the committee to submit its report within 15 days and asked the BCCI to bring the errant teams and players to book on the basis of the report.

The PIL, filed by a Lucknow resident, said he is aggrieved by the anti-national activities and the anti-social acts which are done in IPL. The plea further said IPL is giving rise to gambling and betting and the recent example of which is arrest of three players suspected of spot fixing by the Delhi Police.

‘The IPL has become a hub of black money, gambling, obscenity, degrading the nation, and because of which the performance and the integrity of the Players of the Indian Cricket Team is affected in national and international events. The players of the Indian Cricket team having a primary duty to play for the nation, bring laurels to the nation and make nation proud but they are getting deviated towards spot fixing, gambling, betting, are being auctioned and are deviating from the goal i.e to play for the nation’, it said.
