IP varsity to get BCom course, declares Sheila

In a major relief to students aspiring to pursue B.Com. (Hons) course, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday announced the starting of three-year B.Com. (Hons) course by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. Presenting the Delhi government budget, Dikshit said: ‘My government attaches great importance not only to school and vocational education but also to higher and technical education. Indraprastha University now functions from its own campus at Dwarka, it will start a new course for B.Com (Hons) from 2013-14.’

B.Com (Hons) is the most sought after course of Delhi University with the cut off touching 100 percent last year in certain categories at the prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). According to Dr PK Khurana, Principal, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, which comes next only to SRCC in commerce courses, ‘The total number of seats for B.Com (Hons) in Delhi University is around 15,000. Even for colleges at the bottom of the ladder, this cut-off seldom goes below 70 percent.’

With DU planing to start four-year meta course from next academic year, Saikat Ghosh, assistant professor of English, said: ‘In this post maturing information technology world it is obvious that students will move for three year degree, instead of four year degree and this decision of the government will obviously affect the prestige and reputation of DU.’ On the other hand, Rajkumar Verma, Associate Professor of English, Aurobindo College, said, ‘Student wishing to go abroad for masters need to study for six years post school. The meta course would facilitate this. However, if the student doesn’t have such plans, he could prefer B.Com (H) from other universities as it would save them a year.’

Former DUTA president and university executive council member Aditya Narayan Mishra said, ‘DU leads the country. It’s alumni and it’s quality of education make it a big brand. I feel students who prefer quality education will always come to DU.’
