Sanjay Kumar Jha is the Registrar of IP University. A UTCS officer of 1990 batch, Jha is alumnus of coveted Netarhat School, IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi. Prior to joining this University, he has held a number of senior level administrative posts in Delhi government. In an interview with Millennium Post, he shares his vision for the University and factors that have made it an institution to reckon with. Excerpts:
Q: What is the USP of the University?
IP University is a State University and under the Act, there is a provision of reservation of 85% of seats for students of Delhi. This is the biggest advantage of students studying in Delhi. Availability of vast range of professional and technical courses is another advantage for them. The University offers a wide range of courses keeping in view the requirement of the industry. Located in Delhi, the campus is also close to Gurgaon, thus our students also get the benefit of corporate interaction. Its proximity to domestic and international Airports and Metro line adds to its locational advantages. Curriculam innovation, credit based semester system, continuous evaluation of the system for overall development of the students, industrial training or internship as part of the academic programme, regular updation of academic programmes as per contemporary trends and changing national and global economic and socio – political scenario, an average 220 teaching days in a year, bridging the gap between theory and practice etc are some of the distinctive features of the University.
Q: The University has a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. How this model is working?
The biggest advantage of this model is that the University is not entirely dependent on government funds. We have a kind of financial autonomy to develop academically and in terms of infrastructure. With the financial as well administrative autonomy, the University can charter its growth path. NAAC has recently graded the University with highest grade ‘A’ again. It means the University is developing on the right track.
Q: What changes have been made in this year’s admission process?
We have made drastic changes in admission process this year by making our admission process completely online. For the first time, there was no offline mode of submission of application forms. As a result of it, we received a record number of 2.25 lakh applications for around 29,000 seats for about 154 programmes from across the country.
Q: How are you planning to bring more transparency and accountability on part of the affiliated institutions, especially to improve the quality of education?
We are making continuous endeavours to make our academic process more transparent and accountable so that we become more responsible and sensitive. We are trying to follow a strict academic audit system, especially for affiliated institutes to maintain the quality of education. We are grading affiliated institutions into categories depending upon the quality of the education being imparted. There will be incentives for institutions getting A grades and so on.
Q: What advice do you give to the students of IP University?
My advice is that every student who goes out of the University must become a good human being and must be able to make a mark for himself in whichever profession he goes.
Q: What are your future plans for the University?
Our vision is to turn IP University into a world – class university where there would be a conglomeration of students and faculty members from various places to
generate new knowledge and at the same time creating an environment where confluence of ideas would take place. Our University has made a mark for itself.
