International trade fair begins with a chirp

Delhi’s state bird sparrow truly made an entrance at the annual India International Trade Fair (IITF) at Pragati Maidan, which opened on Wednesday. Overcoming the hiccups of delayed entry, due to VIP presence during the inaugural function, the Delhi Pavilion became an instant hit what with a huge sparrow, which has recently been declared the state bird by Sheila Dikshit’s government, greeting visitors.

Expressing concern over dwindling number of house sparrows in the city, Dikshit had proposed in August to make it state bird, hoping that its new status would help in conserving sparrows. The statue of house sparrow, which has been installed at the entrance became the focal point of Delhi Pavilion.

Dikshit, accompanied by Delhi industries minister, Haroon Yusuf, inaugurated Delhi Pavilion at the two-week long IITF, during which the chief minister visited the various stalls of departments and organisations that were showcasing growth in all spheres that took place in the last 14 years.

In the morning, visitors had a tough time due to the VVIPs presence:  the ticket counters were opened only around 11.30 am, almost two hours late from the scheduled time.

Even the people  who have stalls inside IITF,  had to wait at the entrance from seven in the morning on Wednesday.

Shruti Khanna, who was standing by the entrance, said, ‘We were here around 9.30 am but even after two hours the ticket counters were not opened. They should have managed the inauguration day in a better way than this’.

The theme of Delhi Pavilion is ‘Skilling India’, which showcases Delhi government’s keenness and preparedness to implement skills development programme.

Based on its theme, this year’s pavilion is showcasing the human resource of the country, including the many skills that have contributed to the spectacular growth of various industries in India.

Another attraction for Delhiities is ‘Tihar Jail’ stall that told a story of transformation that took place within the walled jail. The transformation enabled inmates to contribute to the economic growth of the society. The eatables and other items prepared by the inmates are much in demand.

The fair, which began on 14 November, will remain restricted to B2B customers until 18 November. An official said, ‘The crowds would definitely increase once the fair is open to general visitors (from 19 November till 27 November).’

Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) is showcasing its upcoming projects such as knowledge-based industrial park in Baprola, multilevel manufacturing hub at Rani Khera and a new industrial area in Kanjhawla besides various housing projects.
