The union home ministry is not going to appoint any interlocutor for Jammu and Kashmir citing reason of its ‘non-productiveness’ in the past.
While replying over the appointment of joint intelligence chief N Ravi as an interlocutor for the Northeast, home minister Rajnath Singh clarified that similar proposal for Jammu and Kashmir is not viable.
Sensing that his statement might be misinterpreted that he is reluctant on having discussion with the separatists, Singh in an interview to a fortnightly magazine ‘Governance Now’ has said, ‘I am not averse to talks but I am against non-productive talks by anti-nationals to work for their own political image in either Jammu and Kashmir or the Northeast.’ ‘How long can we go on appointing interlocutors? The practices of the past which are non-productive must be discontinued. Therefore, I am not in favour of appointing interlocutors for Jammu and Kashmir,’ he said.
During UPA rule, academicians Radha Kumar, MM Ansari and veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar had been appointed interlocutors for Kashmir conflict.
‘Now the time has come to have a rethink on appointing interlocutors. Having said this, let me clarify that I am not averse to talks,’ home minister said while stressing that the talks should be productive.
When asked his initiatives in ensuring development and peace in the disturbed areas, he said, ‘I am not in a position to share the operational details.
