Insurance scheme for public transport drivers launched

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit along with Union petroleum and natural gas minister M Veerappa Moily on Wednesday launched an
Accident Insurance Scheme for drivers of public transport run on CNG in the capital city.
The drivers would not have to pay any premium and the registration under the insurance scheme would made hassle-free.

‘Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) will steer the implementation of the scheme and would make an annual payment of Rs 35 lakh to Oriental Insurance Company for this purpose. The drivers have been advised to contact CNG stations in Delhi along with relevant documents to obtain insurance certificates,’ Dikshit said.

Moily said that all 2.5 lakh drivers in Delhi would be provided insurance policies within next three-four months. Delhi has become the second state after Mumbai in the country to launch such a comprehensive social security scheme for CNG vehicle drivers.

Under the scheme, the nominee of the policy holder will receive a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh in case a driver loses his life while driving his vehicle. Further, an amount of Rs 25,000 per child (up to a maximum of Rs 50,000 for two children) would be released as
education allowance.

Dikshit announced a corpus fund of Rs 1 crore for the welfare of the drivers of CNG commercial vehicles. She said the fund will be utilised for providing healthcare, education and financial assistance to the needy drivers.

The chief minister assured that her government would release more money in case the need arises and fund utilisation takes place for the welfare of the drivers in the true sense.
The government would work overtime to publicise the scheme to ensure that every CNG public transport driver is covered under this unique insurance scheme.
