Inmate death: Tihar Jail Superintendent transferred

According to a source, the officials — who are posted in Deputy Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent ranks — are suspected to have abetted the act. The deceased convict, identified as Prithvi Pal Singh (32), had once allegedly abused the two officials, who had <g data-gr-id="32">inturn</g> threatened Singh saying that they could get him killed by ringing the prison alarm. This was when Singh was lodged in jail number 8, after an inter-jail transfer from jail number 2 earlier this week.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Pushpendra Kumar, said the allegations against the concerned jail officials are being probed now.

During <g data-gr-id="27">interrogation</g> of the four accused — Manoj, Yashpal, <g data-gr-id="28">Suraj</g> and Mohit, who were already lodged in jail number 8 — on Thursday, it emerged that Manoj had an old rivalry with Singh.

While Singh was a convict sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with a murder case, Manoj was jailed in connection with a gang-rape almost two years ago. Also, both Singh and Manoj were earlier lodged at the Rohini jail.

Meanwhile, Tihar Prison authorities have also initiated an inquiry into the incident and the report is expected to arrive in two days.

“The team involved in the task shall take all points into consideration, including the profiles of the accused and the deceased and also the alleged role of jail officials,” said a senior Tihar official.
He further said the Superintendent of jail number 8, RS <g data-gr-id="25">Naagar</g>, has been transferred to <g data-gr-id="26">Mandoli</g> jail.
