‘Infighting proved disastrous for Cong’

The Congress poll managers ignored the good work done during the erstwhile 15-year Sheila Dikshit regime, during their campaign for the just concluded Delhi Assembly elections, a senior party leader said on Tuesday, taking a direct swipe at Ajay Maken, party-in-charge of Delhi polls. Some party leaders also raised questions on the leadership of vice president Rahul Gandhi.

“In these elections, the Congress deciding to walk away from the 15-years of development, which changed the landscape of Delhi, we had no poll plank worth to name.” said Manish Tiwari. The statement indicates heavy infighting in the state Congress party when leaders failed to pull up their act together that may have proved costly for the party. The party could not win a single seat in Delhi.

He said that the Congress virtually ignored the good work done by the erstwhile government of Sheila Dikshit. Taking a direct swipe at Maken, he said, “The campaign managers in Delhi in their wisdom decided to walk away or distance themselves from those 15-years of development without crafting an alternate vision. That is the story of these elections.”

On the other hand, after being completely decimated in the elections, the Congress unanimously stated the obvious by saying they would go into “introspection” mode. Party’s top brass — Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi also congratulated AAP and its chief Arvind Kejriwal for their stupendous victory.

While questions were raised by party leaders over the infighting existing in the Delhi unit and also the leadership role of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who was overseeing the campaign. Before the polls, the induction of former union minister Ajay Maken to be the face of the party in polls, caused discontent amongst party workers.

The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Arvinder Singh Lovely was replaced by Maken and also that he didn’t get a ticket to fight also may have impacted the party. After the complete rout in Delhi, Lovely, Maken and Delhi in-charge PC Chacko resigned.
