“It won’t be long before there is a British Indian PM at the 10 Downing Street,” Cameron said amid thunderous applause from the 60,000-strong Indians at the stadium. Cameron’s brief speech was interspersed with a smattering of Hindi words.
“Modi said achhe din ayege, achhe din zaroor ayenge,” Cameron signed off and let the Indian PM take the centrestage. Modi began by thanking the British PM and the Indian diaspora for their warmth. “I was told London would be cold, your warmth doesn’t make me feel the chill in the the air,” Modi said to the cheering crowds.
The Indian PM said: “65 per cent of India’s population is less than 35-year-old, a nation that has the power of its youth, can’t remain behind. From the experience of the past 18 months, I can say that there is no reason for India to remain poor.”
Modi added whenever he met PM Cameron, he found that he is very proud of the Indian community in the UK.
India’s strength lay in its diversity, the PM reiterated. “The world looks at us with expectations. We want our rightful place in the world. India is now an emerging global player,” he said.
Both the leaders spoke of challenges of terrorism and global warming. Modi and Cameron pledged to tackle the problems together.
