An ethnic Indian man in Malaysia has died after undergoing a procedure to remove a tattoo in order to improve his chances of becoming a policeman.
N Dinesh Nair, 25, from Sungai Petani, feared that his tattoo would jeorpadise his chances of getting a job in the police force.
He opted to have it removed at a private clinic in the northern state of Kedah on 12 September after he was called up to attend an interview for the post of police constable, Star Online reported on Friday.
Nair slipped into a coma during the procedure and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died on Thursday without regaining consciousness.
His family lodged a police report against the clinic in which it complained of alleged negligence. It is not known what procedure was adopted at the clinic.
According to several online health portals, there are different methods for removing a tattoo, including skin grafting, dermabrasion or removing the top layers of skin, acid de-tattooing or using infra-red, argon and carbon dioxide lasers.
The less risky option available now involves Q-switched lasers used in dermatology clinics and the procedure is performed by certified dermatologists.
