India Medical Association (IMA) has demanded prompt action and immediate arrest of culprits who kidnapped and raped a medical student in Udupi, Karnataka and has said that the Association is painfully disturbed at increasing cases of sexual assaults on women across the country.
Narendar Saini national president of IMA said, 'The recent kidnap and rape of a medical student on Thursday, 20 June, in Udupi, Manipal, Karnataka has brought back painful memories of a similar incident in Delhi last year. Medical and paramedical personnel and students have to attend to patients and perform medical duties even at odd hours. If such instances continue to happen and no action is taken, it will act as a deterrent for women in this profession to undertake such jobs and to go for assignments which require night shifts and late hours of work.’
IMA demanded immediate action from the authorities in this regard and the arrest of the culprits, who should be brought to book and dealt with, in a fast track court. In the interest of the health of patients, IMA also requested them to make proper security arrangements at all such places where the medical professionals, especially women professionals, are required to provide medical services, particularly during odd hours.
