‘India will be importing 60% fuel by 2030’

With <g data-gr-id="20">focus</g> on alternative sources of energy, the government has stressed on building more nuclear reactors for producing nuclear-based energy. According to government officials, as of now the Centre has given its nod for establishing 10 new reactors with the total capacity of 10,000 MW of electricity generation. The work on six reactors is in full <g data-gr-id="18">swing,</g> while the construction work on four others would also start soon. While addressing the inaugural session of International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CATES) Convocation on Thursday, nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar said, “India has been making advance in the field of thorium-based fuels as we have to first develop our domestic resources. At present, India is importing 1/3 of its total fuel consumption and if the same demand persists, we will be importing 60 <g data-gr-id="14">per cent</g> fuel by 2030.”
In addition to it, Minister of State Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh (MoS) would open a show on nuclear power called India Nuclear Energy 2015, where Atomic Energy Commission RK Sinha will reveal new initiatives of the government. The summit starting from Thursday is organised by UBM India with the objective to bring together government and private companies from the civil nuclear industry. The meet will mainly focus on the collaboration between Canada and India as Canada is a leading uranium producer nation.
