India Carpet Expo ends, set to generate Rs 350-crore business

As many as 255 exhibitors from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Panipat, Delhi etc displayed their latest designs of handmade carpets and other floor coverings where 333 overseas buyers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Hongkong, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Luxemburg, Mexico, Nepal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Ukraine etc visited the India Carpet Expo. The India Carpet Expo was also attended by around 250 buying representatives.
It is difficult to quantify the business generated in the fair but in accordance with the feedback given by the participants, it is estimated that fair will generate business of around Rs 300 to Rs 350 crore. Apart from the above, the Expo has also generated more than 1,000 trade enquiries. It may be mentioned that the Indian handmade carpet industry is an age old export-oriented and highly labour-intensive one and has enormous potential for growth.
The industry provides employment to about 2 million workers directly and indirectly in rural areas, especially women in their homes. The handmade carpet industry provides extra and alternate occupation to farmers and others at their homes.
It can make handmade carpets of any design and cater to the demands of every segment of society. The Indian carpet industry is ranked number one in the international market and exported 70-75 per cent of its total production in 2012-13, crossing the $1 billion mark for the first time.
CEPC Chairman Siddh Nath Singh and all Committee of Administration members have congratulated CEPC Executive Director Shiv Kumar Gupta and his team for their strenuous work to make the fair a grand success.
