India batter and bruise Fiji, slam 16 goals

India slammed a whooping 16 goals against minnows Fiji to open their account on a strong note in Wolrd Hockey League Rd 2 at the National Dhyan Chand Stadium on Monday. Fiji were no match for India who controlled the entire game.

Rupinder Pal Singh was adjudged man of the match for his effective display and two goals.

Ramachandra Raghunath and Danish Singh scored three goals each. Debutant Malak Singh scored a brace besides Nithin Thimmaiah, Gurjinder Singh, Kothajit Singh, Manpreet Singh, Dharamveer Singh and Kangujam Singh who too got their names on the score sheet.

Both Malak Singh and Gurjinder Singh were handed a lakh rupees for scoring on their debut for India. India opened the match on a high tempo from the start as they got their first penalty corner in the fourth minute when Ramachandra Raghunath converted his shot. A minute later Fiji allowed another penalty corner and this time Rupinder Pal Singh got into target. Fiji’s initial blues allowed the hosts to dominate the visitor’s backline. The goals started to come in a frequent basis as again India went up 3-0 in the 12th minute with another penalty corner as Raghunath added his second. The hosts kept pressing in Fiji’s half as the visitors looked clueless. It became easier as India controlled the midfield and Fiji was left mainly busy in defence.

India scored six penalty corners throughout the match. The youngsters too summed up India’s dominance playing freely. At half-time India led 7-0 and it was just a matter of number in the second half. The hosts started on the same note building on Fiji’s mistakes and sloppy passes. Danish Mutjaba scored from another penalty corner in the opening minute of the second half. India’s rout continued and the hosts got their desired three points. India play Oman next on Wednesday.
