Wayne Rooney reached the 200-goal mark for Manchester United by scoring twice in a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, giving manager David Moyes the perfect introduction to life in the Champions League.
Free of the uncertainty of the offseason when he was constantly linked with a move to Chelsea, Rooney was the star at Old Trafford after opening the scoring in the 22nd minute, grabbing United’s crucial third and then setting up Antonio Valencia to complete an impressive Group A victory. Simon Rolfes equalized against the run of play for Leverkusen in the 54th but Robin van Persie quickly regained the lead for United, before his strike partner helped finish off the threat.
Omer Toprak poked in a close-range consolation in the 88th for Leverkusen, which failed to reproduce the form it has shown so far in the Bundesliga.
Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his contract extension by grabbing a second-half hat-trick as Real Madrid thrashed Galatasaray 6-1 in their Champions League Group B opener on Tuesday. Real, who started with world-record signing Gareth Bale on the bench, went ahead in the 33rd minute against the run of play when midfielder Isco’s shot went in off the post.
Forward Karim Benzema doubled their lead in the 54th, calmly slotting past Fernando Muslera, before Ronaldo netted after 63 minutes and added his second three minutes later with Bale, who had just come on, involved in the build-up. Benzema scored again in the 81st minute, tapping the ball home following a cross from Ronaldo, before Umut Bulut got a consolation goal for the Turkish champions in the 84th. But Ronaldo, who signed a three-year contract extension at the Bernabeu this week, completed his hat-trick in added time when he sailed past three defenders before firing a powerful left-footed shot into the net.
Bayern Munich opened the defence of its Champions League title with a comfortable 3-0 win over CSKA Moscow. Alaba gave the German champions an early lead with a free kick into the left side of the goal after being fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Mandzukic, who had earlier hit the post, headed home Robben’s in-swinging free kick to double Bayern’s advantage in the 41st minute.
Robben sealed the result in the 68th, blasting home Alaba’s ball over the defense. Manchester City matched Bayern thanks to second-half goals from Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero as Manuel Pellegrin’s team beat Viktoria Plzen 3-0 to open their account.
Juventus got off to a difficult start in Denmark drawing 1-1 against FC Copenhagen. Antonio Conte’s side was stunned when Nicolai Jorgensen fired Copenhagen in front in the 14th minute, beating Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from close range after Pierre Bengtsson’s free kick. Fabio Quagliarella leveled nine minutes after halftime.
Alex Teixeira struck twice in the second half to give Shakhtar Donetsk a 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in Group A. In Group C, Paris Saint-Germain crushed Olympiakos 4-1 and Benfica beat Anderlecht 2-0. Filip Djuricic and Luisao scored goals in the first half-hour to help Benfica to victory.
