In a move to save Rs 100 crore per months, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has replaced 1.25 lakh streetlights with LEDs. With this move, the Corporation won’t have to pay whopping electricity bills and will ensure energy conservation at the same time. This move is expected to help in pollution control by reducing carbon emission by 41,500 tonnes. Moreover, this project is touted to be the single largest LED project in the country.
There will be a “virtual revenue generation” in terms of lesser payment to discoms on account of reduced expenditure for electricity bills and maintenance charges for street, SHML and park lights. “The time frame for execution will be six months from the date of award of work,” said the report. The sharing of saving of electricity and maintenance charges for street, SHML and park lights will be for a fixed period of first seven years of the project.
“As per the social audit conducted, the response from the general public from Malviya Nagar area from where the programme was initiated has been encouraging. It has been gathered that the illumination levels have increased, as well as instilled a sense of safety, security amongst the general public,” said a senior official in SDMC.
“In the next phase, the lights of the parks will be changed. This project will save cost and control emission of carbon. There is no maintenance cost. Solar energy use is in process for schools. The LEDs will ensure great luminance in the area,” said an official.
Not only this, automated control and monitoring system will be installed for better functionality and efficiency which will help in tracking energy consumption.
As part of the smart city project, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North MCD) also announced replacement of conventional streetlights with LED-based Energy Efficient Streetlights. “If implemented, this proposal will not only ensure energy conservation but also make sure virtual revenue generation for the Corporation as LED Streetlights are a cost-effective phenomenon as opposed to the conventional ones that generate whopping electricity bills,” said an official.
