Impressed by political will: German foreign minister

‘We are really impressed about the political will and technical know-how to complete the infrastructure in Delhi and we are very happy that German companies are working with you, the technicians and workers in India,’ Steinmeier, who is visiting New Delhi from 6 to 8 September, said.

He was flanked by German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner and other officials, besides a batch of German media persons.

Steinmeier visited the ongoing underground construction work at the Hauz Khas Metro Station, where the tunnelling process is underway at 33 metre besides the already existing station. Herrenknecht, a German company, has provided tunnel boring machines (TBM) to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the construction work under phase three of construction for Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden line. Steinmeier also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Smriti here. He reached the memorial, where Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, at 4 pm and went straight to the spot where the Father of the Nation was shot dead. Senior staff members at the memorial briefed Steinmeier about the memorial and the last days of Gandhi. Steinmeier spent around 30 minutes at the memorial.

He proceeded to the museum section where photographs, sculptures, paintings, frescoes and other items pertaining to the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi are kept. Before he left, a kit containing Gandhian literature and a memento was present to him by the staff of Gandhi Smriti.
