IMA initiates campaign on rational use of antibiotics

‘We have around 1,700 active local branches which covers population of 30 crore. We have started our campaign on our website and will take it up in every branch and further promote it,’ said Narendra Saini, secretary general of IMA. He further said: ‘We are having a meeting of health experts, people from WHO (World Health Organisation) and other experts to prepare a module on the same. I have also asked the government to make law on the same.’

In a press conference on Thursday, Narendra Saini presented the demands of IMA, which includes banning the use of antibiotics for growth promotion and mass disease prevention, implementation of stringent control on import of antibiotics, promotion of vaccination against infectious diseases and proper monitoring of antibiotics being supplied to the chemist.

This move came after the study conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) found that chicken are fed on antibiotics to make them grow faster. ‘Repeated and prolonged exposure to antibiotics by natural selection leads to emergence of resistant strains of bacteria. They can also alter the genetic material of other bacteria, making them resistant to several drugs and resulting in a global pandemic,’ Saini said.
