Illegal water connections to be regularised, tariff hiked: DJB

The DJB has also decided to hike the water tariff by 10 per cent, which would be applicable for consumption beyond the free water limit. The board has also approved the purchase of 250 tanker chassis, through DGS & D, at a total cost of Rs 31, 95, 81,496 to augment water supply in summer.

“The consumers make illegal connections from water pipelines but don’t pay bills to DJB. The decision will help DJB in enforcing better water accounting as well as reduction of non-revenue water,” said Rituraj Jha, member of DJB. He argued that the decision to hike water tariff by 10 per cent would not affect the lower class, as they would be entitled to free lifeline water up to 20,000 kilo litres per month.

“As per the records of DJB, there are around 20,000 illegal water connections in the city but we fear that the actual figure is more,” he added. He further informed that the board would work up on the promise made by the Aam Admi Party to provide all citizens with metered water connections.

The board has also decided to provide 100 per cent rebate in the late payment surcharge amount for its domestic consumers, for which the consumers need to clear their water bills by March 31. The board has awarded contracts worth Rs 17.36 crores, for rehabilitation and automation of the ranney wells and tube wells, which will be operated by the DJB in the Palla region.
