Surprisingly, Delhi Police personnel are themselves violating the norms to extract underground water by installing illegal borewells in the police stations.
After a few visits to the police stations, Millennium Post discovered the illegal borewells being dug up at secluded places like — inside warehouses; within the premises of the police stations.
Water shortage in various parts of Delhi is already bad but the illegal extraction of water in the form of unauthorised boring makes the condition even worse. Almost all the police stations in Delhi are facing shortage of water problems.
Interestingly, Delhi Police who claims: ‘Shanti, Sewa, Nyay’ are themselves adopting illegal ways to overcome scarcity of water. When the reporter visited the police station, she asked the police personnel about the water management, and one of the police officials, requesting anonymity said that illegal borewells are been dug up in the police station premises.
From the past two months, installing of bore wells have begun. ‘To avoid any action against such illegal acts done by the police personnel, the installation of borewells is being done at secluded places,’ the official added.
To name a few, when Millennium Post visited the Shahdara police station, it was found that the borewell was newly installed at the back side of the police station where the impounded or recovered vehicles are supposed to be parked. Whereas, in another nearby police station (name withheld on request) the borewell was installed in May as there was no water supply by Delhi Jal Board.
When asked about who allowed the installation of the boring, the official added: ‘The staff had complained the Station House Officer (SHO) about the water problems within the police station, he advised to install illegal boring.’ However, the SHO remained unavailable for comments.
VV Chaudhary, Additional Commissioner of Police (north-east) said: ‘I am not aware that any borewells have been installed in the police stations. It is not to my knowledge.’
Further he added: ‘Boring is illegal! So why would we do something going against the laws.’
