‘IFFCO has played crucial role in combatting hunger in India’

Karnataka and Kerala Governor H R Bharadwaj has said that Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd (IFFCO) has played a major role in alleviating hunger in India. Delivering the Silver Jubilee Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial IFFCO Lecture at the NCUI Auditorium, New Delhi, he said,  ‘IFFCO is striding on the same path and creating synergy between the cooperative and agricultural development much needed for alleviating hunger and poverty.’

Bharadwaj also presented the IFFCO ‘Sahkarita Ratna’ and ‘Sahkarita Bandhu’ awards, which recognise outstanding efforts of individuals  in promoting the cooperative movement in India. This year Arunachal Pradesh cooperator and social reformer Binny Yanga was chosen for the IFFCO ‘Sahkarita Ratna’ award while Himachal Pradesh educationalist and cooperator Sita Ram Chauhan was given the ‘Sahakarita Bandhu’ award.

Hailing IFFCO as ‘the success story of cooperatives in India’, Bharadwaj expressed appreciation for IFFCO’s  performance in various spheres of production, transportation, sales and energy consumption.

It is not only producing quality fertilisers but also helping in community development and improvement of the condition of poor and marginal farmers in India, he added.

‘The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd is a symbol of hope in India’s cooperative movement. True to its values, it has persistently remained committed to the needs of its members in particular and the Indian farmer across the country,’ observed Bharadwaj.

Remembering the role of India’s first prime minister and the father of the cooperatives movement in India Jawaharlal Nehru, he said ‘He not only industrialised the country through democratic processes but also tried to maintain the unique features of Indian philosophy.’  Calling Panditji a true democrat and pioneer he said, ‘The glory of Indian democracy is a gift from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.’

Bharadwaj also shed light on Nehru’s tolerant spirit, scholarship and passion for promoting education and peace in India.

Commenting on Nehru’s vision of cooperatives, he said, ‘He wanted to make the cooperative movement the basic activity in every village as well as elsewhere and the cooperative approach the common thinking of India.’

The Governor also expressed concern about how to retain the relevance of cooperatives  in the current changing times and noted that making institutions conducive to the contemporary changes is an urgent necessity.

Bharadwaj went on to add that information and communication technology can be of immense help in strengthening the cooperative movement. Speaking on the occasion, IFFCO Managing Director U S Awasthi said, ‘IFFCO is today an example of the collective strength of Indian farmers and has become a name to reckon with not only in India but all over the world.’

‘What makes IFFCO unique is the blend of a professional, corporate-like functioning and cooperative spirit, he pointed out.

‘I am immensely happy that our efforts to keep the values of the cooperatives movement alive have reached such commanding heights that the IFFCO memorial lecture today is a an event eagerly awaited by people involved in the cooperative sector,’ added Awasthi.
