‘Please look at Bengal. If Bengal is developed, then India is developed,’ West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the inaugural ceremony of the 100th Indian Science Congress.
Banerjee has repeatedly complained that the state was not receiving any support from the Centre to tide over its financial crisis and has demanded a three year moratorium on interest payment.
Banerjee however shared the dais with the PM at the function which was inaugurated by the President, Pranab Mukherjee. ‘I feel very happy to host the 100th Indian Science Congress in Kolkata. Bengal has produced so many scientists. Science has immense significance in modern age development. However, the real and practical usage of science is when the down-trodden and grassroot level gets the advantage’, Banerjee said.
Expressing pride in the fact that Bengal produced Nobel Laureates like C V Raman, Amartya Sen, Mother Teresa and Rabindranath Tagore, she urged attending scientists to solve the main problem of the future, poverty. ‘Bengal is the science capital of India. It is the gateway to the North East, to the South East Asian countries’ Banerjee said.
