Identify land in J&K for Kashmiri Pandits: Rajnath

The NDA government, in an attempt to keep its pre-poll promise, has asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to expedite the process of identifying a ‘suitable land’ in the Kashmir Valley for the rehabilitation of nearly three lakh Kashmiri Pandits who migrated from the early 1990s due to rise of militancy.

On Friday, union home minister Rajnath Singh wrote to J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah, asking him to allocate land to build residential units for these migrants under the rehabilitation scheme. Sources said Singh has asked Abdullah to allocate land close to the native place of these migrants and also sought adequate security in and around the area to prevent any untoward incident so that they could be rehabilitated with full dignity.

As per government statistics there are nearly 62,000 registered Kashmiri families who migrated out of Valley to either Jammu, Delhi or to other parts of the country due to militant violence in the Kashmir valley, especially in the bordering areas.

The government move could be seen as a party strategy considering the upcoming state assembly elections, which is likely to be held in November-December this year.
