I&B ministry asks states to monitor cable content

The union information & broadcasting ministry has shot up a letter to all the states to set up committee at state and district levels to monitor the content released through cable linked on television channels  across India.

In his recent letter to the state governments, I&B minister Prakash Javadekar has said that the centre had been requesting the states to set up these committees as they play an important role in enforcing the provisions of the Cable TV Network (Regulation) Act, 1995 and Rules framed thereafter.

The I & B ministry had already notified district collectors, sub divisional magistrates and commissioners of the states as authorised officers under section 2(a) of the Act. These officers have been empowered to take action in cases where violation of the Cable Act is noticed.

There are a large number of states which have reportedly not set up the committees to monitor content released through various cable networks in the country. For instance, principal secretary to Delhi LG, Nutan Guha Biswas, admitted in one such communication that the committees had not been set up in the national Capital.
