Jagdish Mukhi, MLA (Janakpuri) since 1982
Jagdish Mukhi is the senior-most member in the Delhi Legislative Assembly and has been representing the Janakpuri constituency for the past 32 years, first as member of erstwhile Delhi Metropolitan Council and now as MLA. He joined the prestigious Indian Police Service (IPS) in1968 but resigned after only 11 months, to join Sh. Bhagat Singh College as lecturer. He contested election for the first time in 1982 from Janakpuri MLC and won. As finance minister of Delhi government from 1993 to 1998, Mukhi was adjudged the best state finance minister by the Planning Commission of India.
In a exclusive interview to Millennium Post, Mukhi shared his views with Siddheshwar Shukla.
How did you enter politics?
I was interested only in social work but the problems faced by people during the emergency era in 1975 pushed me into politics. All the men in my family were behind bars. I contested my first election from Janakpuri in 1980 and have been representing this area ever since.
Tell us about some of the important work you have undertaken for your constituency.
I have opened five professional colleges in the area, one girls college and two multi-gyms. I have also built two skating rings in Janakpuri, two swimming pools, musical fountains and a district centre in Janakpuri.
What are the major ongoing projects in Jankapuri?
The third Dilli Haat on 12 acres of land is being constructed here. More than 95 per cent of work for this has been completed. This will be the best-equipped Dilli Haat in Delhi with 120 shops, hostel facility, air-conditioned auditorium and more. Work is also underway on building an underground reservoir in the area, a sewage pumping station.
Tell us about your wish list for your constituency.
Sitapuri is a new area that has been added to Janakpuri. I want to provide all the civic amenities in this area during my current tenure. Besides, I want a footbridge and community centre here.
What is your major achievement as minister during the BJP regime in Delhi?
I held the portfolio of finance minister, as well as the planning and education and excise portfolios at the time. The major achievements include the conception and drafting of the plan for the GGS Indraprastha University, the planning and execution of the first phase of Delhi Metro, imposing blanket ban on single digit lottery system and introduction of the the concept of ‘dry day’ (no selling of wine) on 14 religious days in the city.
What is your plan for Delhi if BJP comes to power?
We have a very detailed plan for each sector. For instance, I have a plan to reduce the wastage of water from 40 per cent to 10 per cent.
