I-T officers attack CBI men for arresting colleague

An Income Tax officer was on Tuesday arrested by CBI while taking a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a person, after which his fellow officers assaulted the CBI team and seriously injured two sleuths. The IT officers attacked the CBI team with fire-extinguishers.

It was learnt that Niranjan Kumar had demanded a bribe of Rs10 lakh from the man for settling an issue of income tax assessment for the financial year 2011-12. While he was receiving the first instalment of Rs2 lakh of the bribe, CBI team raided the premises and caught him.

Meanwhile, furious over the raid, members of Income Tax Officers’ Union (ITOU) gathered and assaulted the CBI team with fire extinguishers leaving two of them seriously injured and rest three with minor injuries. “One of the CBI officers has been admitted in the hospital,” CBI sources said.

The probe agency has filed an FIR against the tax officials at a local police station for alleged assault and obstruction in the work of the government agency.

A trap was laid and the I-T Officer was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. Searches are on at the office and residential premises of the accused.
