He also reminded that he had ordered firing on the kar sevaks exactly 23 years ago on 30 October, 1990, in Ayodhya to uphold the Constitution.
‘Some people are instigating riots. I must remind them that they cannot challenge the might of the government. The government is very powerful. I must also tell rioters that I know how to crush such activities,’ Mulayam said while recalling how as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1990 he ordered firing at kar sevaks who had assembled in Ayodhya on the call of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the BJP for bulldozing Babri mosque and construction of Ram temple.
Over 15 people were killed in the firing. The incident had earned Mulayam unflinching loyalty of Muslims and sobriquet ‘mullah’.
Mulayam said that his situation in 1990 was like that of Arjuna in Mahabharat who was forced to kill his own family members for the sake of ‘dharma’. ‘I had to order firing to uphold constitution of India and the Supreme Court order,’ he said.
He also said that he is ready to accept the BJP if it changes stand on the Muslims and leaves contentious issues. He was addressing party workers in SP headquarters.
