‘I challenge Singh to a debate’

Differences within the BJP once again came to the forefront on Thursday, with Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi attacking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Independence day speech on one hand and party veteran L K Advani saying one should not be critical of leaders on this day.

Modi who has been projected as the prime ministerial candidate of the party challenged the Prime Minister on a public debate on governance and said the nation is restless for change. ‘You are ruling a big country, we are managing a small state. I challenge the Prime Minister to a debate on the issue of development and good governance. A contest between the government sitting in Delhi and Gujarat,’ said Modi.

While Modi attacked the Prime Minister, senior BJP leader LK Advani indirectly took a jibe at Modi’s criticism. ‘I heard the Prime Minister today...Today on Independence Day, without criticising anybody, we all should realise that India has unlimited potential for the future,’ said Advani. In the past, Advani had expressed his resentment over Modi’s appointment as the head of the campaign committee, with Advani resigning from all positions in BJP.

Earlier, Modi in his speech slammed the Prime Minister for India’s weak and feeble response to provocations from Pakistan and China and attacked him over a variety of issues ranging from corruption to the Centre’s flagship food security bill. ‘The question is not of Pakistan alone. Today, national security is under threat. The Chinese intrude into our land and we keep mum. When Italian soldiers come and kill our fishermen, when Pakistanis behead our soldiers, we get concerned,’ said
Modi in his Independence Day address at a college in Bhuj.

Modi said that Prime Minister’s speech did not have a tough message for Pakistan. ‘I had expected the PM to do something that would boost the confidence of our jawans, to give our army strength, but regrettably that did not happen. I share the concern voiced by Rashtrapatiji in his address to the nation,’ said Modi.
