Husband of deceased AIIMS doctor sent to 14-day custody

The accused, Kamal Vedi (34), also a doctor by profession, was booked for alleged dowry demands and torturing his wife — the suspected reasons behind pushing her towards the extreme step.

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, body of the deceased, identified as Priya Vedi (31), was reportedly taken to her native place in Jaipur for cremation by her relatives.

The police also said that there were marks in Priya’s arms, apparently inflicted by a sharp object, which could substantiate allegations of physical torture.

However, conclusions cannot be drawn unless the post-mortem report is obtained. The report is also expected to clarify if Priya had injected any poison into her body before allegedly slashing off her wrist veins.

Elucidating the sequence of events, a senior police official said that the police had first received a missing complaint, lodged by relatives of the deceased on Saturday. Hotels were contacted to verify all recent check-ins and a particular hotel at Central Delhi’s Paharganj area was found to have the details of Priya’s driving license issued by the transport authority in Rajasthan, suggesting that she had checked-in there on Saturday.

Then the hotel management was asked to call her and get her connected to the police. When she didn’t take the calls, an employee was sent to the concerned room to check on her. When she did not open the door, the hotel reported the matter to the police. A team was sent there immediately and Priya’s body was discovered.

Notably, she had posted certain information on Facebook and had also reportedly left a four-page suicide note, suggesting marital discord and dowry harassment to be the reasons behind her alleged suicide.  According to a source, relatives of the deceased also told the police that earlier this month, she had allegedly tried to kill herself by consuming around 15 sleeping pills.
