As many as 20 fire tenders had to be sent to douse a major fire reported from the cotton market at north Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area on Monday evening. No casualties were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire hasn’t been ascertained yet.
Earlier this year, two major fire incidents were reported from Sadar Bazar — one in January and the other in May, in which, many shops were gutted.
The fire incident on Monday was reported at around 5.50 pm and gutted the entire Rui Mandi (cotton market). It took around two hours to douse-off the fire, after which a cooling operation was launched, said a fire official. He further said, “since the area is very congested, it proved to be very difficult for fire tenders to make their way to the exact spot.”
He further added there were loose uncovered electrical wires hanging in the market, which was very risky. “The fire could have easily engulfed other shops and spread to the neighbouring market had it not been contained in time,” and eye-witness said.
