Human trafficking racket busted, seven minors rescued from Delhi

The tale of exploitation of domestic helps in the Capital seems far from being over. In yet another case, an NGO on Wednesday reportedly exposed trafficking racket, in which maids were brought from Jharkhand and West Bengal.

The NGO, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, also rescued a 17-year-old minor girl from a house in M-Block, Geeta Colony. She was working there for the last four years and was allegedly physically assaulted by the family and was not even paid for her work.

"I did not get a single penny for my work. The placement agency took my entire salary. I had no freedom of movement and absolutely no contact with my family,” the girl told the police after being rescued.

Her mother Sukurmuni said, “My daughter was taken to Delhi almost five years ago by a local agent, Ajay Kumar. He took her to an agency that was run by an NGO, Aadivaasi Seva Samiti, in Shakurpur. Around four years ago, I came to meet her but she was so scared of her employers that she refused to even recognise me. I very happy that she is with me now but also sad that I could not help my daughter for so long.”

Chairperson of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, R S Chaurasia, said, “It seems the increasing number of cases of exploitation of domestic helps has still not alarmed the authorities. Children are the cheapest form of labour. So people try to maximise their profits by employing minors. Public as well as the authorities need to be sensitised regarding this hidden form of exploitation.”

The family, meanwhile, confirmed that the agent, Ajay Kumar, used top take the girl’s salary on the pretext that it was his responsibility to pay the girl.

Meanwhile in another case, six minors were rescued from the Capital after a child, rescued from a household in posh Geentajali Enclave in South Delhi, told the police about her agent and other children. “On the tip-off, a trafficking racket was successfully exposed. In at least two cases, the maids were treated very cruelly, including physical and sexual harassment by the employers. There were also complaints against the placement agencies, which have allegedly misappropriated the children's wages," said the police. One of the rescued children said that her employer, Nanki, a resident of Malviya Nagar, used to beat her and did not pay her. Her medical examination supported her claim. Nanki’s son used to harass her sexually as well.

One of the accused, Laxman, owner of L G placement company, has been sent to the police custody in this regard. Many other accused have been nabbed.
