How can I forge my signature, asks Pranab

Refuting allegations that the signature in his resignation letter for Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) was forged, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee said on Wednesday that he possibly could not forge his own signature.

‘Will I forge my own signature? A forgery takes place when someone forges someone else’s signature,’ said Mukherjee in Thiruvananthapuram, where he is campaigning for the presidential election. While the former finance minister defended himself, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) threatened to file an election petition as it alleged that the letter of resignation was fake.

‘All options are open. An election petition can be filed after the declaration of result. We will cross the bridge after receiving the copy of the order on our plea against Mukherjee,’ said the BJP leader Satya Pal Jain.

Earlier, the presidential nominee of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) P A Sangma held a two-hour meeting at the BJP leader Sushma Swaraj’s residence to discuss the further course of action on the matter. Sangma has demanded a copy of the returning officer’s detailed order which rejected his objection to the Congress leader’s candidature.

It is learnt that the Election Commission has sought the order on rejection of Sangma’s objection from the returning officer.
