The decision of Nitin Gadkari not to seek a second term as BJP president is seen as victory of veteran leader L K Advani over Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Advani had vehemently opposed the RSS-backed candidature of Gadkari.
After scoring a brownie point over the RSS, Advani didn’t miss a chance to hit out at Gadkari at the ceremony to install Rajnath Singh as the new party president. ‘In the last three years if there is one issue that has grabbed the country’s attention it is corruption and there should be no compromise with any form of unethical behaviour,’ said Advani.
Advani also said the focus of the party should be that prominent people in all states should be role models in terms of ethics and probity. ‘I’m glad that our adversaries are disappointed with Gadkari’s decision to bow out,’ he said.
Advani also warned the new president of challenges that lie ahead of him. ‘Rajnath Singh is from Uttar Pradesh, but the situation in which our party is in UP pains me,’ said Advani, underlining the fact that the road ahead for Singh was not smooth.
Rajnath, however, did not forget to thank Gadkari, who proposed his name. ‘We all wanted Gadkariji to be elected as party president again, but the way baseless allegations were levelled against him, he said he would resign.’
