Hostel for women cops & centre from those from N-E regions to come up soon in city: WCD Min

The national Capital will now have two new spaces, especially a hostel for women in the Delhi Police and the other a centre exclusively for women who hail from the North-Eastern states. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has cleared these two projects which are likely to be implemented by this year.

After the government approved the provision of 33 per cent reservation for women in all police cadres, one of the primary concerns was regarding their stay. Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Sanjay Gandhi said: “We have created a sea change in the texture of police which will start showing from this year by having 33 per cent women in our police forces. The main concern, however, was where these women will live.” For strengthening of infrastructure for women in the police force, the budget allocated is Rs 6.2 crore, informed a senior WCD official.

“There are two special proposals which have been approved by the ministry regarding new spaces to be created for women in Delhi. Firstly, we will come up with a hostel for working policewomen. Second, a centre will be established for women from the North-East regions,” explained the official.

The official further added: “The budget allocated for setting up the centre for women from the North-East regions is Rs 23.53 crore. The centres will extend medical help, counselling, legal and police assistance to women in distress from the region.”
