Amid uncertainty, the 23-year-old Delhi gang rape victim was flown out in a special aircraft to a super speciality hospital in Singapore late Wednesday night ‘reportedly’ for a small intestine transplant. The distance between Delhi and Singapore is roughly five and a half hours.
Sources said the victim was accompanied by five family members and three doctors from Medanta hospital, including critical care specialist Dr Yatin Mehta and a gynaecologist. ‘Passports and visas of the victim and other passengers were issued by the government earlier,’ the sources added.
After leaving Safdarjung hospital around 10.30 pm on Wednesday in a Medanta hospital ambulance, the girl reached Delhi airport at 11.10 pm.
Sources said she would be treated at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth super speciality hospital. ‘The government, which wants the girl to recover at any cost, had discussions with its Singapore counterparts and made a decision to take her there. She may get a small intestine transplant, which the Safdarjung doctors had removed due to infection. She is being taken to a hospital that specialises in organ transplants,’ the sources said.
Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung hospital, BD Athani, said, ‘The girl is being shifted to Mount Elizabeth hospital, which is state-of-the-art. The hospital has multi-organ transplant facility. The treatment may also take some time.’
Member of Parliament Amar Singh and superstar Rajnikant have been treated at this hospital in the past.
There were conflicting reports regarding the fate of the victim since Wednesday morning with doctors not putting out the daily report on her health condition. This had raised concerns on the already deteriorating condition of the girl’s health.
A health bulletin scheduled for 4.30 pm was called off without an explanation. A second briefing that was announced for 6.30 pm also failed to take place.
In the morning, the doctors had informed that the girl suffered bradycardia wherein the pulse rate drops and heart beat slows down. Her blood pressure is also reported to have fallen and her life support system has not yet been removed. Besides, there were also reports that she had a cardiac arrest, which was brought under control.
Doctors at the Safdarjung hospital, where she was rushed to after the incident on 16 December night, had on Tuesday said the bleeding which was caused by sepsis, a severe blood infection that can lead to organ failure, remains a cause of ‘major concern’.
Meanwhile, the security at the Safdarjung hospital was beefed up on Wednesday evening before she was taken to the Delhi airport. There was heavy police presence.
