Hooda cocks a snook at new Haryana governor

In less than 48 hours of a new governor taking charge, the relationship between the Haryana government and the Raj Bhawan has hit the rock bottom. Soon after taking over, the new incumbent in Raj Bhawan Kaptan Singh Solanki, a BJP veteran, had said he would prefer repealing the controversial Haryana Gurdwara Act, which was approved by his predecessor.

In a veiled retribution to the governor, chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda administered oath of office to new information commissioners ignoring Solanki. In the past, the information commissioners were administered oath by the Governor. The names of the new appointees were cleared by outgoing governor Jagannath Pahadia on 25 July, the last day of his tenure.

This led the Opposition to immediately rake up the issue, terming the step as ‘unconstitutional’, claiming that Hooda had administered oath barely an hour after the new Governor had taken charge. The opposition had also alleged that the rules and procedures in making the appointments were
not followed.

Even as Solanki took oath as new Governor of Haryana, the chief minister went ahead and administered the oath of office to two as commissioners of the state information commission  and three others as the commissioners of Right to Service Commission. Senior IAS officer Ashok Khemka took a dig at the appointments in his tweet saying: ‘Lure for post retirement sinecures harming institutions.’ Khemka tweeted.
