Hooch claims 12 lives in UP, toll likely to go up

As many as 12 persons were killed and half a dozen others fell ill after consuming spurious liquor in almost a dozen villages of  Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh. The state government suspended six police officials on charges of laxity, government spokesman said. SP, Azamgarh, Arvind Sen said that 10 persons who died of illicit liquor have been identified. Two others were also suspected to be hooch victims but their relatives had already cremated their bodies, he said.

Locals claim the toll is 26, though this could not be confirmed officially. It started from Adampur village on Thursday evening when villagers fell ill after consuming spurious liquor and soon 24 persons from Atardiha, Kaudia, Amilo, Chakia, Narav and Deehva villages under Mubarakpur police station fell ill.

They were first admitted to a local hospital but later shifted to the district hospital. At the time of going to press, the official toll was twelve.

The district administration has started a probe and action against excise officials is being contemplated. Station officer Vishwanath, beat in-charge Rajdev Yadav and four constables have been suspended on charges of laxity, the SP said.
