Honour killing bid in Gurgaon

Replicating the latest episode of Satyamev Jayate in real life, a young couple was shot at by a member of the girl’s family on Friday. They belonged to different castes and had eloped and married each other about a year-and-half ago.

‘The victims were identified as Monica [24] and Ved Prakash [26]. As per Monica’s statement, her parents called them to an unknown place, promising that they will get them properly married in front of all the relatives. The couple then went to a temple, where a family member of the girl opened fire at Ved Prakash. In a bid to save her husband, Monica was shot too,’ a Haryana Police official said.

The official added that they both were taken to the civil hospital, where they were given first aid. But because their condition was critical, they were shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. The incident took place in Safeda Nagar area of Pataudi Village in Gurgaon.

The couple had been living in hiding in Rajasthan and Haryana ever since they eloped. But somehow this time, the girl’s parents came to know about their hideout.

Praveen Kumar Mehta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Gurgaon said, ‘On Thursday evening, after tracing Monica, her family members contacted her and promised her to conduct their marriage legally. On this pretext, they took the couple in a car and later in the night, the duo were shot at and left on a roadside near Safeda Nagar.’

A case of attempt to murder along with other Sections of IPC has been registered against seven persons and all possible attempts are been made to apprehend the accused.

The accused include Jyoti [Monica’s mother], Lata [Monica’s sister] and her husband, Raju, Bhola [Monica’s brothers], and Ashu and Praveen [brother’s friends], Mehta added.

On one hand, the Haryana Government is making shelter homes for couples who want to get married against the wishes of their parents, on the other hand, the cases of honour killing are on a rise.

These shelter homes provide a honeymoon package for 15 days, in which accommodation along with security and a marriage ceremony are included. After 15 days, if the couple feels secure enough, they can leave the place. Otherwise they can stay their for as long as they want on very nominal charges.
