Home ministry dissolves, reconstitutes NDMC council, 4 BJP members find place

In quick succession of events, Union Home Ministry dissolved and reconstituted the council of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) even as one and half years remained for the expiry of the council. In the new council the vice chairman and three members nominated by the previous Congress government have been replaced by BJP leaders.

In the reconstituted council, former Delhi Cant MLA Karan Singh Tanwar has replaced senior Congress leader Tajdar Babbar as vice chairperson. Senior BJP leader, former Delhi mayor and former MP from north west Delhi Anita Arya, BJP’s minority Morcha national president Abdul Rasheed and employees union leader of NDMC BS Bhati have been appointed as members in the council. The newly-nominated members were administered oath of the office and secrecy by Delhi lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung on Saturday morning. New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi, New Delhi MLA Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Cant MLA Surender Singh were also present in the swearing in ceremony along with NDMC chairperson Jalaj Srivastava and senior administrative officers.

The council is the top most body of NDMC to take policy decisions. By reconstituting the council BJP has now gained majority which had only one member so far — Meenakshi Lekhi. In the past two meetings of the council, Congress and AAP members had joined hands to overrule the policy decisions.

‘There is appropriate representation of every section of society in the new council. Arya is from SC community, Rasheed represents minority and Bhati represents employees. I hope they all will work for the development of the area,’said Satish Upadhayay, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party chief.
According to sources, the decision to dissolve the council was communicated to NDMC chairman in the late evening on Friday. It’s pertinent to mention that the Congress members had already approached

Delhi High Court to prevent the Union Home minister from dissolving the council where the case is still pending but court had not passed any order.
