Scores of protesters, who demanded immediate action against the culprits behind the recent series of attacks on Catholic churches in the national Capital, were detained by the police on Thursday afternoon.
Soon after the incident, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh instructed the Delhi Police Commissioner to make proper arrangements for the security of churches and all other places of worship.
It was around 11 am, the protestors started gathering outside the Sacred Heart Cathedral near Gol Dak Khana and in an hour, there were more than a hundred of them shouting slogans.
The police then soon had to barricade Ashoka Road approach when the protesters started marching towards Union Minister Rajnath Singh’s Ashoka Road bungalow. “We have detained the protesters and they have been taken to Parliament Street police station. They did not have permission to protest outside the church and we cannot allow them to protest on public roads,” said Mukesh Meena, Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi).
The protesters were also allegedly manhandled by police officials, claimed the protesters through a letter circulated in the media. The protesters claimed that the police have allegedly tried to trivialise all the recent church attack cases.
