Hizbul poster boy Burhan Wani killed in encounter

Police chief K Rajendra said Wani’s death was a big blow to the Hizbul Mujahideen, a separatist group in the militancy-hit state. Two of Wani’s associates also died in the operation. Wani was the son of a school headmaster who lives in Southern Kashmir.

He belonged to an affluent family but he dropped out just 10 days before his Class 10 board exams in 2010 and ran away from his home. He misused  social networking sites by releasing online videos asking young Kashmiri men to join the terror group for ‘holy war’.

Wani soon emerged as a social icon for terror outfits and vulnerable targets. This in turn gave headaches to the Indian security agencies who placed a Rs 10 lakh bounty on his head.
