Himalayan range is fragile: Bahuguna

Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna while speaking at a workshop organised on ‘Mountain Meteorology and Landslides: A workshop on way forward with special reference to Uttarakhand’ said, ‘The entire Himalayan range is fragile and eco-sensitive. The landslides-prone zones have been identified and we are avoiding construction of roads or any commercial buildings at these locations.’

‘Tunnel roads are the best option from the safety point of view. We are collecting information from various organisations; the expert views of scientists, geologists and environmentalists on different aspects while the process of re-construction and rehabilitation is going on,’ the chief minister said.

‘An expert committee comprising of well-known environmentalists including RK Pachuri has been set-up by the state government for the conservation of ecological resources and to check balance between environment and development’, he added.

National Disaster Management Authority member VK Duggal said that in the mid-June natural calamity, the situation became critical for state machinery, and then Army came to the rescue. The pilgrims remained stranded in the tough terrains, and inclement weather hampered the rescue and relief operations in the beginning. Connectivity had gone in many places. But bravehearts and daredevils of defence forces crossed all hurdles and came out victorious.’
