High Court to issue detailed directions on night shelters

The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) informed the court that it has ‘the action plan’ ready for providing shelters to the homeless coming winter.

Senior advocate Jayant Bhushan, appearing for an NGO, alleged that DUSIB has filed an incomplete affidavit as it did not deal with the issue of minimum space to be provided to each homeless person in shelter homes.

The joint apex advisory committee, consisting of members of NGOs and the government bodies, can be asked to inspect the existing night shelter homes to ensure proper facilities. The committee members should also meet twice in a month to ensure proper co-ordination, he said.

The court, which has fixed the matter for further hearing on 12 November, then said that it will issue the directions to DUSIB and other concerned authorities.

Earlier, it had asked the city government to file a report along with additional documents on the status of night shelters in the national capital.
